Japan and other news
March 29, 2011

Like everyone, I was in shock hearing about the huge earthquake in northeast Japan, and then watching the horrific power of the tsunami. And the tragedy is still unfolding, with so many missing and the nuclear power plant melting. I don't know anyone in the area, but having lived in Japan, I feel sorely for those immediately affected. For a good perspective, read Chin Music Press founder Bruce Rutledge's poignant blog post that mirrors my feelings.

If you are in Hawaii or need an excuse to visit, meet me in Honolulu, March 31-April 2, at the Association for Asian Studies and International Convention of Asia Scholars joint annual conference. We're (Chin Music Press) in Booth #527.

Lastly, I'm honored to learn I have won the 2010 Elliot Cades Award for Literature. Awarded by the Hawaii Literary Arts Council, past winners include Paul Theroux and Lois-Ann Yamanaka. The award ceremony will be May 14 in Honolulu at the Hawaii Book and Music Festival. Another reason to visit Hawaii, if you really need one!

Congratulations, Todd, on the award! Wish I could run off to Hawaii like that. I've actually never been there. But it's quite a trek from where I live. I have also been deeply affected by the ongoing tragedy in Japan. My sister-in-law's family is in Osaka, so they are largely unaffected in the physical sense, but they are deeply affected as part of the Japanese people. The world can only admire the way they have been handling their tragedy. I am doing what I can in my own humble way.
