2013: Year in review
December 30, 2013

It was pretty good year for books, no huge blockbuster like '50 Shades of Grey' which I haven't read, not sure I will. But the printed book hasn't died, nor have novels, as regularly predicted. Bookstores survived, some have thrived.

Ebook sales continued to grow, although Barnes and Noble's Nook appears to be an upcoming casualty. Amazon and Kindle continue to dominate. I've read a few books on my iPad, very convenient for the right book at the right time. I still like the feel, look, smell, and low tech of bound ink-on-paper.

Personally, I finally finished Haruki Murakami's '1Q84", unfortunately it wasn't my favorite of his books, and it took me a while to slog through it. A lot of it seemed repetitious, and the surprise ending didn't grab me. I also read several books for review as I posted here and on the Asian Review of Books website. New Year's resolution: start to whittle down the stack of books I've accumulated.

Writing-wise, it was a little slow, working full time will do that. But I've made progress on four projects. I hope to finish them in 2014 (another New Year's resolution). I'll let you know how that goes.

Writers who passed away in 2013 (ones I've read anyway): Syd Field, Tom Clancy, Elmore Leonard, Roger Ebert, Donald Richie, Norman Udevitz.

Happy New Year and see you in 2014.

I have a Kindle that has its useful place as a way to read books, but the presentation of your books, Todd, demands being read in the printed form. This year I am being introduced to the work of Mieko Kanai for the first time. Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu.

Thanks Gail! I liked her "The Word Book" that I reviewed a few years ago. Haven't read anything else, so let me know what you like. Have a good year!

Gail
I reviewed Mieko Kanai's "Indian Summer" on Amazon. And I just started another of her books in the same series, "Oh, Tama," which I will also eventually review on Amazon.
